The Best Seed-Oil-Free Chips, Ranked

Almost every chip on a standard grocery shelf is fried in a blend of canola, soybean, sunflower, or corn oil, chosen because it is cheap and neutral, not because it is good for you. The frying oil is where a chip picks up most of its fat, so switching brands is one of the easier seed-oil swaps to make: the product still tastes like a chip, and the only real cost is a dollar or two more per bag.

The catch is that a front-of-bag claim like "made with avocado oil" does not always mean every ingredient is clean. Some flavored bags fry in avocado oil but carry a seed oil in the seasoning blend. The brands below were judged on what they fry in and on what shows up in the seasoning, with the plain salted versions treated as the benchmark.

How we picked

We started from the frying oil, since a chip picks up most of its fat from the fryer, and only considered brands that use avocado or coconut oil across their whole line rather than in one hero SKU. From there we ranked on ingredient-list length, price per ounce, how widely the chips are stocked, and whether the seed-oil claim holds on every flavor or just the plain one. Each pick links to our full review of that brand.

  1. 1Best overall and best value

Boulder Canyon Avocado Oil Sea Salt Kettle Chips

A real potato chip fried in avocado oil, three ingredients on the plain bag, 4 to 6 dollars, and stocked in ordinary supermarkets. The frying oil is avocado across the line; only the Salt & Cracked Pepper seasoning carries a trace of safflower oil.

  2. 2Best for salsa and nachos

Siete Maiz Sea Salt Corn Tortilla Chips

Three ingredients: nixtamalized corn, avocado oil, sea salt. The most caveat-free product in Siete's range and the one to reach for when you want a tortilla chip rather than a potato chip.

  3. 3Best frying oil (coconut)

    Jackson's Honest Sweet Potato Chips

Fried in organic coconut oil, the most oxidatively stable option in the aisle. The faint coconut sweetness works with the sweet potato better than it does on a plain potato chip.

  4. 4Best grain-free option

Siete Grain-Free Tortilla Chips, Sea Salt

Cassava-based, gluten-free and grain-free, still fried in avocado oil. The trade-off is a starchy flour and a 5 to 7 dollar bag, so it is a clean swap for a chip, not a health food.

  5. 5Best flavored bag

Boulder Canyon Malt Vinegar & Sea Salt Kettle Chips

Same avocado-oil fryer, a longer but clean seasoning statement. A good example of a flavored chip that stays seed-oil-free where most flavored chips do not.

  6. 6Best if you want a plain potato chip in coconut oil

Jackson's Honest Sea Salt Potato Chips

Non-GMO potatoes, organic coconut oil, sea salt. More of a health-store item than a supermarket grab, and the coconut note is more noticeable here than on the sweet potato version.

Best value

Boulder Canyon Sea Salt is the value call: avocado-oil frying, a three-ingredient bag, and a price only slightly above a conventional kettle chip, in a normal grocery store.

The bottom line

For most people, Boulder Canyon Sea Salt is the answer: it is a normal potato chip, it is cheap, and it is at the store you already shop at. Reach for Siete when you need grain-free or want a tortilla chip, and Jackson's Honest when the frying oil is the specific thing you are optimising for. Whichever you pick, the plain salted versions are the safest, because that is where the ingredient list is shortest and the seasoning-oil question does not come up.
