Hellmann's Review

Soybean oil is the first ingredient in Real Mayonnaise

Hellmann's
2.0/ 5
Contains seed oils$4-6 / 30 oz

Hellmann's is the default American mayonnaise and it is built on soybean oil. The 'Olive Oil' and 'Avocado Oil' line extensions do not fix that, they are blends that still lean on canola or soybean oil. There is no version of Hellmann's a seed-oil-avoider should buy. It scores 2.0, and this page exists to point you at what to use instead.

Hellmann’s Real Mayonnaise, sold as Best Foods west of the Rockies, lists soybean oilas its first ingredient. Soybean oil is roughly 54 percent omega-6 linoleic acid, one of the most concentrated sources of it in the food supply. The “with Olive Oil” and “with Avocado Oil” variants are blends where canola or soybean oil still does most of the work.

If you are avoiding seed oils, the honest answer is that no Hellmann’s product on the shelf qualifies. The rest of this page is about the swap.

What’s in it

Real Mayonnaise: soybean oil, water, whole eggs and egg yolks, distilled vinegar, salt, sugar, lemon juice concentrate, calcium disodium EDTA, natural flavors. Soybean oil first, plus added sugar and EDTA.

The “Hellmann’s with Olive Oil” jar is the one that catches people. Its ingredient statement is a blend, typically canola oil and soybean oil doing the structural work, with a smaller amount of olive oil added for the label claim. It is not an olive-oil mayonnaise in any meaningful sense. The light and reduced-fat versions are the same base oils with water and thickeners.

Mayo matters more than most condiments here because of how it is used: on sandwiches, in tuna and chicken salad, and as the base of ranch and other creamy dressings. It is often the single largest source of soybean oil in a household that otherwise cooks from scratch.

Seed oil status

Soybean oil is the first ingredient in Real Mayonnaise. The Olive Oil and Avocado Oil variants are blends that still rely on canola or soybean oil. Confirmed against published retailer ingredient listings and Hellmann's FAQ (https://www.hellmanns.com/us/en/faq.html), September 2026.

Pros and cons

What holds up

  • Inexpensive and available literally everywhere
  • Consistent flavor and texture that most recipes are written around

What to weigh

  • Soybean oil, roughly 54 percent linoleic acid, is the first ingredient in Real Mayonnaise
  • The 'Olive Oil' version is mostly canola or soybean oil with a little olive oil added
  • Contains added sugar and EDTA
  • No SKU in the line is seed-oil-free

Price and where to buy

Hellmann’s is cheap and everywhere, that is the entire case for it, and it is not a case about ingredients. If price is the constraint, homemade avocado-oil mayo is cheaper per ounce than the clean store brands: one egg, a cup of avocado oil, a teaspoon of mustard, a squeeze of lemon, and salt, blended with an immersion blender in about two minutes.

Who it’s for, and who it isn’t

Buy it if

Not recommended for anyone avoiding seed oils. Included here for comparison only.

Skip it if

Anyone reducing omega-6 intake, every version of Hellmann's is soybean- or canola-oil based.

How it compares

The direct replacement is Primal Kitchen Avocado Oil Mayo, closest on flavor and texture, avocado oil as the only fat, available at most of the same stores that carry Hellmann’s.

Sir Kensington’s Avocado Oil Mayonnaisealso works, just be sure to get the jar that says “Avocado Oil,” because Sir Kensington’s Classic is 100% sunflower oil. And Chosen Foods makes an avocado-oil mayo that is comparable to Primal Kitchen. Any of the three is a clean one-for-one swap.

FAQ

Is any Hellmann's mayo made without seed oils?

No. Real Mayonnaise is soybean oil first. The Olive Oil and Avocado Oil variants are blends that still use canola or soybean oil as the main fat.

What is the closest clean replacement?

Primal Kitchen Avocado Oil Mayo is the most direct swap on flavor and texture. Sir Kensington's Avocado Oil Mayonnaise also works. Both list avocado oil as the only fat.

Is homemade realistic?

Yes. An egg, a cup of avocado oil, a teaspoon of mustard, lemon juice, and salt, blended with an immersion blender, takes about two minutes and costs less per ounce than Primal Kitchen.
